After growing up in Tylertown, MS, Dr. Conerly relocated to Alexandria in July of 1990. Since that time he has practiced in Alexandria, building a state-wide reputation for compassionate, caring, and effective medical care. Dr. J. Michael Conerly was a founding member of Mid Louisiana Surgical Specialists in 2003.  He graduated from the University of Mississippi School of Medicine and completed his general surgery residency at Roanoke Memorial Hospital and the University of Virginia Medical School.  As a surgical specialist, Dr. Conerly identifies and treats a broad range of injuries, deformities, and diseases using operative procedures.  He is the only trained surgeon at MLSS to perform the TIF procedure, an incisionless surgery for the treatment of chronic acid reflux.  His additional area of interest involves treatment of breast disease, including cancer.  

Dr. Conerly is board certified by the American Board of Surgery, a fellow of the American College of Surgeons, a member of the American Society of General Surgeons, and a member of the American Society of Breast Surgeons.  He also serves as the Chairman of the Board for LAMMICO, a Louisiana based medical malpractice company.  

In his spare time, Dr. Conerly enjoys golf, tennis, reading, and exercise. He has completed two marathons and likes to visit New Orleans. Had he not chosen medicine, he would likely have gravitated towards teaching chemistry.

Dr. Conerly’s favorite quote is, “If you tell the truth, you don’t have to remember anything.” (Mark Twain.) He believes that telling patients the truth is always the best practice.  In his early years of practice, one of Dr. Conerly’s mentors shared this quote with him, and he has always remembered the lesson.

Finally, Dr. Conerly tries to incorporate the mantra of Christus (“to extend the healing ministry of Jesus Christ”) into his treatment, believing that it helps his patients during their time of need.
